How to choose a credit card in Nepal
A credit card is cheap or expensive depending on how you use it. Here's how to choose and use one well:
Know the monthly interest: Most Nepali cards charge about 2% per month — roughly 24% a year. A lower rate matters most if you ever carry a balance.
Use the interest-free grace period: Pay your statement in full within the grace window (typically 15–45 days) and you pay no interest at all.
Watch the minimum payment: Paying only the minimum (usually 10% or NPR 1,000) leaves the rest accruing interest — it's the most expensive way to use a card.
Weigh the annual fee against perks: Higher-tier cards charge more but may add lounge access, insurance and a higher limit. Pick for how you'll use it.
Mind cash-advance costs: Cash withdrawals carry a fee and start charging interest immediately — there's no grace period on cash.
Pay in full to stay free: Cleared within the grace period every month, a credit card effectively costs nothing while building your credit history.
Types of cards
Nepali banks issue several card types for spending, travel and access to cash.
Credit Card
Borrow up to a limit and repay monthly. Around 2%/month interest, with an interest-free grace period if paid in full.
Debit Card
Spends directly from your account. Issued with most accounts; low annual fee and wide ATM/POS acceptance.
Dollar (USD) Card
A prepaid or credit card in USD for international use, subject to NRB's annual foreign-exchange limit.
Travel Card
Prepaid foreign-currency card for trips abroad, letting you lock a rate and control spending.
Gold / Platinum
Premium tiers with higher limits and extras such as lounge access and travel insurance. Higher annual fee.
Rewards Cards
Cards offering points or cashback. Still rare in Nepal — a clear gap, and one to watch as the market matures.
